Hike for Scouting

Hike For Scouting

Take a hike!  And bring a friend with you!

No rudeness intended—just an invitation to the 18th Annual Spring Hike for Scouting.  This awesome event will take place at two different times and two different picturesque locations: March 31st at Peace Valley Park in New Britain, PA at 12 noon and April 21st at Silver Lake Park in Bristol, PA from 9am-3 pm.  Refreshments will be available to all participants and everyone (scouts and non-scouts, adults and kids, boys and girls) is invited!

Besides enjoying the beautiful outdoors, this is a fundraising opportunity for scouts.  Scouts should collect pledges to sponsor their hike, much like other organization -sponsored walks or marathons.   Participants get to keep 50% of the money they raise for their own scout activities, such as camping and scouting trips.  The other 50% goes to Bucks County Council and stays in Bucks County to support scouting!   And there are also prizes Scouts can also earn prizes:

If a scout raises $30, he receives a ...Hike for Scouting T-shirt
If a scout raises $60, he receives a ...Collectable golf-style shirt with Bucks County logo
If a scout raises $100, he receives a ...Collectable long-sleeve denim shirt with Bucks County logo

Not only is the hike a great chance to earn money, but it's also a wonderful family activity.  In the past, scouts have brought their sisters, parents, and friends to share some scouting goodwill.  Raising money isn't a requirement to participate; having fun definitely is.   See you there!

Training News

Attention Boy Scout and Webelos Leaders! The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training will be available the weekend of April 13th-15th at Camp Kirby, Upper Black Eddy, PA.  Join in a fun-filled program of hands-on outdoor skills training  designed to help you master the basic camp skills required for Tenderfoot to First Class.  This training will help you deliver the promise of Scouting to yourself and the youth you serve.  Attendees will also work with other Scouters, meet new friends and reinforce skill techniques with fellow leaders. This is a required training to obtain TRAINED status for Boy Scout Troop leaders with direct contact with Scouts, including Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and those registered leaders who work with scouts.

Playwicki and Tohpendel Districts Join Forces for 2007 Camporee

The 2007 Playwicki and Tohpendel Joint Camporee is scheduled for April 27th, 28th and 29th at Tyler State Park in Newtown.  This year’s theme is “Outdoor Sports” and will feature BB guns, archery, fishing, sling shots and pellet guns. Don’t worry moms  --all these shooting sports activities will be conducted and supervised by the Sportsman Alliance from Ohio, a community service organization that runs these activities for Scouts around the nation.

In addition to shooting sports, we hope to have things like a hunting dog exhibition, tracking activities, game-calling, and forestry merit badge instruction.

So troops, start practicing!  An inter-troop disc golf competition will be the finale event on Saturday afternoon. The best players from each troop will represent their unit, with serious bragging rights at stake!

Saturday night features a combined campfire and OA Tap Out.

All these events are still in the planning phase, so if you have any good ideas or would like to help with any of the activities, contact Dawn Macomber at BDMac1@aol.com or Tom Leitz at tleitz@bsamail.org

Scouting For Food

Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of scouts, the 2006 Scouting For Food Campaign was a great success! Thirty-five scouting units collected over 100,000 pounds of food.  More than 500 scouts and 300 leaders helped to collect food for the drive.  Some great strides were also made with community partnerships to allow more food to get to the people that need it most. In the works is a plan to collect food all year round so that the Bucks County Food Banks will be able to give food to needy families not only between Christmas and New Year’s but also during other times of the year when food banks often run low.

A big thank you to Packs 1, 13, 19, 24, 61, 100, 102, 123, 132. 153, 168, 185, 212 and 316 that helped out with this year’s food drive. Troops 6, 19, 27, 41, 53, 79, 102, 113, 117, 123, 124, 127, 130, 132, 133, 168, and 380 likewise did an excellent job with the  drive.

Playwicki and Pennsbury District Plan Lower Bucks Breakfast

The Playwicki and Pennsbury District are sponsoring the Lower Bucks Community Service Award Breakfast to honor an outstanding supporter of scouting in our county.

In the past this award has been presented to individuals. This year we are excited to announce that a company, Calkins Media Inc., will be the recipient. Calkins Media is the parent company to the "Bucks County Courier Times" and "The Intelligencer" newspapers. Packs and troops in our area are constantly being highlighted in these publications and each year both papers run an eight-page tab featuring scouting and the “Values for Life” essay contest.

The breakfast is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2007, 8:00 AM to 8:59 AM at the Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, PA. The goal of the breakfast is not only to recognize an outstanding supporter of boy scouting in our area, but also to raise over $20,000 for the 13,000 youth served by the Bucks County Council, Boy Scouts of America.

A $125 tax-deductible donation is suggested per person or tables of eight are available for a $1,000. Make your reservation by sending in your check made payable to the BCC, BSA (account #76) and sent it to The Bucks County Council, B.S.A., One Scout Way, Doylestown, PA  18901.

Please share this breakfast information with your employer and individuals who believe in scouting.

On January 12th through the 14th over 250 scouts and leaders had a blast at Ockanickon Scout Reservation. We made two very tall towers where we had the American Flag and our District Flag displayed on top of each tower. Each sled had to use their orientation skills to find each station. Rich Yatchyshyn and Jim Sullivan of Troop 102 always do an excellent job putting together both the Webelos and Scout Klondike. Another thank you to Crew 102, who again did an excellent job cooking everyone dinner on Saturday night. This event is always the highlight of the scouting year for Pennsbury and thanks again to all the leaders and parents who make it great.

Derby Tests Scouting Skills

Playwicki District Boy Scouts and Webelos Scouts tested their knowledge and abilities at the 2007 Klondike Derby held on February 3, 2007 in Tyler State Park, Newtown.

They were young men on a mission in the park, as the scouts held the annual Klondike Derby. During the Derby, about 200 Boy Scouts and 100 Webelos Scouts tested the skills they learned over the years at stations such as  “Dead Horse Gulch”, “Mountain Top”, “We’re Stumped” and “Watch Your Step”.

At “We’re Stumped,” for example, the scouts had to figure out how to slide their sled along a fallen tree without it falling off. Up to 200 points were given to the successful groups at each station. At the end of the day, after pulling their sled to as many stations as possible, the final point totals were tallied and the winners determined. Congratulations to the following winners:

Boy Scouts:
1st  Place – Troop 5
2nd Place - Troop 78
3rd Place – Troop 29

Webelos I :
1st Place – Pack 19 Renegades
2nd Place – Pack 10 Webelos Winners
3rd Place – Pack 10 Homedogz

Webelos II :

1st Place – Pack 230 Eagles
2nd Place - Pack 19 Flaming Arrows
3rd Place – Pack 19 Cobras

Webelos Combined:
1st Place – Pack 28 The Best
2nd Place – Pack 46 Gamers

Winners of the Sled Race :
1st Place – Pack 230 Eagles
2nd Place – Pack 19 Renegades

Win or lose, everyone certainly had a good time. Thank you to Dawn Macomber and Dave Clark for organizing this year’s event. Thanks to Craig and Pete Hill and the rest of Pack 4 for providing the hot dogs and hot chocolate. Finally, thanks to all those volunteers who braved the cold and manned the stations. See you next year!

Fun at the Klondike!

Redneck SledTohpendel District has had a busy month with an even busier month ahead.  On February 3rd we held our Annual Klondike Derby with over 130 youth and 50 adults.  This year’s theme was geo-caching which was similar to a high tech treasure hunt.  Each sled was equipped with a gps unit that we loaded the coordinates up to and the youth had to go to find a cache and take an article from it.  flag ceremonyBut we also didn’t forget about the traditional method of map and compass.  Through out the park there were Trigger caches where the youth would have to pull out a compass and use the coordinates to arrive at a station there they would compete in a skill or teambuilding event.  Some of the stations included “Gizmondo” a three person slingshot that launched slightly frozen water balloons.  There was also “Hali-Bout Fishing” a game in which loaded mousetraps where placed in a circle and the scouts tried slingshotto catch the mousetraps using a makeshift fishing pole on which a metal washer was tied.  But to go fishing the scouts had to find the washers to tie to the pole (that were located in a previous cache).  Navigation has always been a part of scouting however we are just moving to a more high tech version.  GPS usage is now incorporated into several merit badges.  A large thank you should be given to Bob Grasmeder and Chris Finnegan and all the adults and members of Troop 67 that planned and organized this year’s event.

Exploring
Do you know what Exploring is?  Exploring is an exciting, work-site based program for teenagers (boys and girls) age 14 to 20.  Have you always wanted to ride an ambulance on an emergency call?  Extinguish real fires?  Practice responding to a terrorist alert?  Learn about Italian culture? See the inside of a beating heart?  Bucks County has a number of posts that do those activities and much, much more!  Email Sandi Leonard at saleonar@bsamail.org to find out more!
Teens Learn More Than First Aid At Central Bucks Ambulance
They Learn to Save Lives and Be Leaders, and They Get To Have Fun

(Partially Reprinted with Permission from "the Central Bucks Beat")

Every Tuesday evening, 19 teens gather together at Central Bucks Ambulance to learn how to save lives.  They are part of Explorer Post 125, a program that introduces 14- to 17-year-olds to emergency medical services.

Some want to be doctors, paramedics, or medics, while others just want to engage in public service.  For 15-yearolds Brian Campbell of Plumstead and Nick Lager of Buckingham, it's a bit of both.

"I like the field and I want to give back to the community," Brian said. "I want to be a medic in the military."  Nick said he wants to become a doctor and finds Exploring a good way to get his medical training started while serving the community.

Doylestown area teens Nicole Brandecker, 14, and Katie Zimmerman, 15, were inspired by their loved one and the medical care they recieved.

"My brother was in a very bad accident, and one of our buddies who works here, he saved his life," said Nicole, an aspiring teacher.  Katie saw her brother survive brain cancer and now wants to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. "He's the one who inspired me," she said.

The Explorers get to First Responder training, CPR, First Aid and more, and when they are 15 years old and have received the proper training, they can accompany the squad's paramedics and EMTs on ambulance calls. "It's awesome.  You get to see what people don't see in a lifetime," said Emily walsh, an 18-year-old Buckingham resident who wants to be a paramedic.

The Explorers can also take the EMT class and become certified EMTs at age 16, and several Explorers have, or are planning to do so.

"We're not just a bunch of kids who come on Tuesday night to goof off," said Matt Cain of Doylestown Township, "We come here to learn," added Brian Campbell.

Joe McGinty, the paramedic who started the Explorer Post at Central Bucks Ambulance a year and a half ago, said the teens gain more than medical knowledge from the program.  "It teaches them responsibility and leadership because they run the Post themselves," he said, adding he and a couple of other adults at the rescue squad act as advisors.

The Explorers have elected officers, and they all vote on projects before undertaking them.  They recently filled and sent 15 stokings to service members serving in Iraq after one Explorer posed the idea and the others agreed to it.  They also are considering going on a ski trip when the weather is warmer.

"It's a good way to meet people," Nicole said.  Katie agreed: "You'll get friends, you'll have fun, and you might wind up saving someone's life," she said.

Teens interested in joining the Explorer Post can call Mary Wallover at the squad at 215-348-8385 to sign up.  Dues are $3 a month and are put toward the cost of social events, such as food for camping or ski trips.  You can also check out their new website at: www.explorerspost125.com

Career Days
This Fall, Central Bucks and Palisades School Districts had their Career Days.  These awesome events lasted all morning and enabled middle school students to learn about a variety of careers by talking to actual working professionals.  Many of our speakers came from Scouters in Bucks County, and, according to the schools' students and principals, this year's experience was stellar!

If you want to be a Career Speaker for our Spring Career Days, which will be held in Lower Bucks at Poquessing Middle School, Franklin Roosevelt Middle School, and Tawanka Learning Center, email Sandi Leonard at saleonar@bsamail.org.

Cub Scout Resident
Camp Kirby
Boys who go to Council-sponsored summer camps are more likely to stay in Scouting.  For many of them, that’s why they joined Scouts.  Camp Kirby offers a variety of camping experiences.  Mini-camp is designed for first-time campers or parents who want to come, but can only stay one or two nights.  Three-day camp is our traditional camp and Webelos Extended is a full week of more challenges for boys finishing Bears or Webelos I.  Boys can come with their Pack or Den, just their parent, or by themselves as a Provisional Camper.

Come join us this summer for a Jungle Safari!  The pool is a favorite spot for all our campers.  Our certified Aquatics Director and Lifeguards provide a fun place to relax, receive instructions in swimming and water safety, and complete Aquanaut for Webelos.  Certified archery and BB instructors run shooting sports.  Everyone has the opportunity to try archery.  Those staying three days or longer also learn BB shooting.  Weeklong Webelos get the opportunity to use wrist rockets (slingshots) as well.  Ecology provides a fun time with science and nature.  In Outdoor Skills, everyone plays theme-related and water games.  Those staying three days or more also learn Scout skills such as cooking, knot-tying, first aid, and/or compass skills.  The program is rounded-out with a project at crafts.  Campfires and water slide keep the fun going in the evenings.

Meals are served in our air-conditioned dining hall.  Campers stay on cots in large 7-person tents.  Leaders have the option of bringing their own smaller tents if desired.  Flush toilets and showers are available.  Portable toilets are also located in other convenient locations.

Make sure you have the updated forms to sign-up!

Boy Scout Camp Ockanickon
2006 will be a summer that stands out in history at Ockanickon Scout Reservation.  Our staff excelled and created one of the best camping experiences for many youth.  We also broke record numbers this year as we came to the aid of our fellow scouters that had to leave Treasure Island after the floods.  We were able to offer the Ockanickon experience to many of the units that were scheduled to attend Treasure Island.  This year also saw some changes to our merit badge and activity schedule.  Our staff started to do a mock accident for the emergency preparedness merit badge which gave the kids a closer look at the kind of accidents that could really happen and the work that goes into treating such injuries.  Our Dan Beard program continued to grow in size as more leaders and first year scouts realized the benefits of that first experience.  I am sure that if you talk to any youth that participated in the Dan Beard program this year, they will tell you about the Dan Beard songs and foil packs.  With an experience like this, who wouldn’t want to come back to Ockanickon?  We currently only have a few spots left open for this summer, so be sure that if you want to attend Ockanickon in the summer of 2007 you get your reservations in soon.

Call Bill Mischke at 215.297.5290 x-30 to reserve your spot for the 2008 summer season.  If you were unable to join us during the summer there is still time.  Ockanickon rents camp sites and cabins all winter.  If you would like to reserve a space please contact the Bucks County Council at 215-348-7205 and ask for the weekend camping coordinator.  Please keep an eye on the Ockanickon website to find out about many up and coming programs.  www.ockanickon.org

The Philmont Experience

Born in 1938 as Philturn Rocky mountain Scout camp, today's Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the ranch's camping, training, and work programs. Most activity takes place during the summer, but Philmont also offers its Fall Adventure and Kanik winter program.

Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America's oldest national high-adventure base. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails. Philmont is large, comprising 144,493 acres or about 215 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rockies.  Philmont has high mountains which dominate rough terrain with an elevation ranging from 6,600 to 12,441 feet.

There is a magic spell at Philmont. Long ago the Native Americans felt it. Later, Kit Carson, Lucien Maxwell and other mountain men were captivated by Philmont Country. A century later, the late Mr. Waite Phillips found himself under its spell. Nearly half a century ago, his son, Elliott and his cousins found it almost a necessity to return to Philmont during their high school and college summer vacations.

The area surrounding the ranch is rich with history; from the Native Americans who made this arid land their home, a famous stop on the Santa Fe Trail, a prospecting community, and a working cattle ranch. The town of Cimarron boasts a number of historical buildings, including the St. James Hotel—site of at least 26 killings during Cimarron's wilder days.

More than 820,000 Scouts, Venturers, and leaders have experienced the adventure of Philmont since the first camping season in 1939. Throughout its existence, conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques has helped maintain the ranch's wilderness flavor.  Hiking is only the beginning - crews can choose from rock climbing, black powder rifle shooting, western lore, horseback riding, gold panning, and much more.

It is with great pleasure that the Bucks County council continues to offer Philmont Expeditions to the Scouts and Scouters of Bucks County.  Presently, 60 participants are busily preparing themselves to meet the challenges of a Philmont Expedition.   The 2007 Bucks County Council Philmont Expedition will leave Bucks County on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 and arrive at Philmont on Thursday, August 9, 2007 after spending the night in LaJunta, CO.  We'll leave base camp the next day for an 11-day backpacking trek in the mountains that are unique to Philmont.  The expedition returns home on Tuesday, Aug-21-2007.  In the spring, crews will begin to train together on local day hikes to break-in boots and test backpacks.  Crews will then take at least 4 overnight (or longer) hikes to learn to work together as a team, optimize gear, and try out backpacking stoves and delicious freeze dried cuisine.  They'll also elect a scout as crew chief who will lead the crew in the backcountry at Philmont.

Although this summer’s expedition is closed to any new applicants, Bucks County Council will continue to sponsor expeditions with the next planned trip for 2009 (there is the possibility of an expedition in 2008!).  Philmont expeditions are open to any Scout or Venturer between the ages of 14 and 18 years, are in good health, and prepared for strenuous activity.  Please note the age (grade) requirement must be met!  The typical costs for a Philmont adventure are ~ $1300, which includes all transportation, accommodations, food, and travel expenses.

If you’re interested in attending a future Philmont Expedtion as a Scout or Scouter, additional information can be obtained from your unit leader, who will receive registration information through a direct mailing from the council, or directly from the Scout Service Center in Doylestown.
